James Earl Jones has signed to transfer the rights to his iconic Darth Vader voice to a new AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology.
The 91-year-old has been voicing iconic Star Wars villains since 1977, most recently as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the new Disney+ series, which also stars Ewan McGregor.
However, there have been reports that the actor wants to retire, and speculation is now confirmed that Lucasfilm was using AI to replace Jones and use his voice for the future.
The actor himself seems to have endorsed the move, and the people behind advanced technology even say he’s offering advice.
“He said he was looking to downsize this particular character,” creator Matthew Wood began.
“So how do you move forward?” he told Vanity Fair, and when he presented Jones with the work done to recreate his famous voice, the actor said he wanted to “keep Vader alive.” Approved the use of archival voice recordings.
Wood also said that Jones was credited with guiding the performance of the new Disney series, describing his contribution as a “merciful godfather”.
So, even after his death, Jones congratulated Respeaker on recreating and reusing his voice in all future Star Wars films.
Vader will appear in Episode 3 of the new Obi-Wan Kenobi program.
TV Line recently confirmed that the voice of the half-robot villain belongs to Jones.
Jones has lent his voice to Vader several times over the years, starting with the first trilogy, which ended in 1983.
He returned in 2005 for Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and voiced Vader in the 2019 film Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
Vader’s voice may be instantly recognizable, but the character’s movements are always performed by another actor within the costume.
For example, in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Vader is actually played by three different people.
This includes stuntmen Domitorius Bystrewski and Tom O’Connell, Hayden Christensen.
Bistlevski revealed the secret in a comment to fans on Instagram: “Darth Vader is played by three people. We all worked together to create the greatest Darth Vader in the history of cinema.
“It’s me, it’s Hayden, it’s Tom. We’re symbiotic. We all contributed to our strengths to create the best representation of the character.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is streaming on Disney+.
