Newport County 1-1 Carlisle United: Corey Whelan scores a draw for the Blues at Rodney Parade

Newport midfielder Nathan Moriah Welsh has doubled his goalscoring tally this season.

Corey Whelan scored the defender’s first goal in his 50th game for Carlisle United to earn a hard-fought draw at Newport County.

Nathan Moriah Welsh was giving the home side the lead when he flicked the ball past Thomas Hawley after a whimsical run by Thierry Nevelle.

But in the second half, Whelan scored a corner kick for Callum Guy.

Carlisle nearly grabbed the win but Paul Huntington saw a volley hit the crossbar at the next corner.

The draw ended Newport’s four consecutive defeats, including at least three in League Two.

Newport manager James Rowberry said:

“There was a disappointing dressing room there, and conceding a goal from a set-piece was terribly disappointing.

“We probably didn’t impose a game plan in the second half like we did in the first half and we weren’t comfortable enough with the ball.

“But on the flip side, we scored a point and ended a three-game losing streak in the league. We have to, we can do it, and we’re going to build on that now. Goals. is to give something to the fans.” “
